Who We Are
We are a group of Shia Muslim women from across North America with a vision to strengthen our communities and to pursue spiritual proximity to the teachings of our faith through racial justice advocacy.
Shia Racial Justice Coalition began in response to conversations regarding racism and anti-Blackness in Muslim communities following the anti-racism reckoning of 2020. As members of these communities, we recognized a desire for change.
Rooted in the Ithna Ashari Shia tradition, the vision and work of the Shia Racial Justice Coalition is inspired by our faith and history. We are driven by the examples of social justice and reform in the lives and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Ahlul Bayt (as) to create communities that are free from racial, social, and economic injustices.
Recognizing the gaps in our collective understanding of race and racialization, we aim to increase literacy on historical and contemporary social and political issues in North America.
We are also committed to dismantling racism within our communities that keeps us divided within. We aim to use racial justice as a platform to unite Shia Muslim communities across North America while uplifting Black Muslim voices.
We are just getting started and hope you will join us as we work towards building a more just future, Insha’Allah.
Be an enemy of the oppressor and a helper to the oppressed.
